I really wanted to say that these photos are recent, but it's been a while since I had the opportunity to visit this magnificent city called Dubrovnik (2015).
Shall we revisit it with me through some photos?
(A little vocabulary lesson/phrasebook at the end of the post)
Here we have a map of the old city and main points of interest:
Dubrovnik – A Jewel of the Adriatic
Dubrovnik is a historic coastal city in southern Croatia, situated on the Adriatic Sea. Known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," it is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik is famed for its stunning medieval architecture, well-preserved city walls, and rich cultural heritage.
History
The city traces its origins back to the 7th century, when it was founded by refugees from the Roman city of Epidaurum (modern-day Cavtat). Originally called Ragusa, it developed under the protection of the Byzantine Empire and later achieved remarkable autonomy as the Republic of Ragusa in the 14th century.
As an independent maritime republic, Dubrovnik flourished between the 14th and 19th centuries, rivaling Venice in trade and diplomacy. The city was known for its advanced diplomacy, progressive laws (including the abolition of slavery in 1416), and a strong merchant fleet.
The republic maintained its independence until 1808, when it was annexed by Napoleon's forces. After the fall of the Napoleonic empire, it became part of the Austrian Empire and later Yugoslavia. Since 1991, Dubrovnik has been part of an independent Croatia, though it suffered significant damage during the Croatian War of Independence, particularly in the siege of 1991–1992. It has since been carefully restored.
Geography and Landmarks
Dubrovnik is known for its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, encircled by massive stone walls built between the 12th and 17th centuries. Notable landmarks include:
- Stradun (main pedestrian street)
- Rector’s Palace
- Sponza Palace
- Franciscan Monastery
- Dubrovnik Cathedral
- Fort Lovrijenac
- Mount Srđ, offering panoramic views of the city
Culture and Modern Life
Today, Dubrovnik is a vibrant cultural center and a popular filming location (notably for Game of Thrones, where it served as the setting for King’s Landing). It hosts the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, showcasing classical music, theater, and dance.
The city's economy is driven primarily by tourism, but it also has a strong tradition in arts, crafts, and education, being home to the University of Dubrovnik.
